Live TV studio, film set, stage, prop house, editing suite, rehearsal space, and laboratory are the designated uses that Lea Collet and Marios Stamatis will assign to Green Ray during their 5 day residency. They will work with a group of professional actors they have recruited via an online casting call, using tropes of contemporary popular media, such as reality shows and talent contests. The work will be a continuous public rehearsal; accessible to the gallery visitor or passerby but also filmed for live broadcast and edited in post production.
In part, the work is a durational performance for Collet and Stamatis who will be building the sets, directing the rehearsals, participating in performances and editing the footage each day. The whole process will be staged and made public in the gallery space and by live stream, making visible the politics of performance in an economy of immaterial labour. For three hours each evening, Collet and Stamatis will collaborate with the professional actors, co-writing scripts and directing them in performative acts in accordance with their skill sets. Without a definitive goal to the rehearsals, nor an opportunity to walk off stage, or set, once in the gallery, the work questions the function of professionally honed dramatic skills in a performance-driven society.
The live work will be further framed through a film, constructed from the footage taken over the five days. The film will be screened on the final day of the residency and trailers for it will be edited each day in the gallery by Collet and Stamatis and broadcast online. Committed viewers will be able to view both the live stream and the heavily edited trailers, drawing attention to the division between the theatrical and the real and our fetish for artifice.
The title of the work is a play on the term ‘Key Performance Indicators’, used unanimously by companies to define and measure the achievements of their employees in relation to company profits. Key Performance Intervals reclaims performance from its relationship to quantifiable economic gain and shifts the emphasis towards the act of performing itself; improvised, collaborative, and inconclusive.
